Hot damn. 7mpg city. Fuck me with a cactus. Luckily Monday I’m going to a friend’s house to buy some pieces parts that should help me lean out this confound Edelbrock.

Nah, it’s in the Jag.

That’s a bit better. You are only down .6 of a liter with that engine.

but do you NEED to lean it down? what do your spark plugs look like?........ my daily gets a SOLID 8.25 miles per gallon, and the plugs look JUUUST within range of not being lean......

Holy shit your gas is cheap. 75L (20gal) here would be $96 CAD/$74 USD.

Check the timing, too. Does the car have vacuum advance?

This! Idle mixture, make sure the floats are set right, base timing, vac. advance working, etc. I feel like you should be averaging at least double digits unless you’re driving like a madman (or spending a lot of time on the highway with that th350)

Base timing is set to stock, vacuum advance appears to be working fine. I actually drive this car slower than my Miata 99% of the time. It’s much more suited to slow cruising than the Mazda is.

But, hey, at least you guys can import kei cars :(

The threads on my plugs are wet as hell with gas and it smells like dookie at anything other than idle.

float hanging up?, or fuel pressure issue? floats too high? whole lot of other stuff can cause the plugs to turn up wet when you pull them. what do the centers, the electrode, and ground strap look like?
how is the engine running once you get it started? does it ever drop a cylinder while its running?

So once I start it sometimes I’ll have a really garbage idle for a while until it’s been driving for a few miles. It’ll just bounce around between almost dying and “normal” idle. Today in the drive through line I was sitting with the A/C on and it was idling smooth then it started getting rough and bouncing all over the place trying to die. Not sure at all what’s going on. I don’t know enough about carbs to tell what the floats are doing. The electrode and center of the plugs were dry because my idle circuit has been adjusted as close as I can get it according to the vacuum gauge.
The plugs are very likely the wrong heat range, thus the orange coloring. I’ll probably get new ones after I adjust the carb Monday so I don’t screw them up somehow when adjusting the carb.

sadly enough, the centers of those plugs show the engine to be running just about right...... that rough running, could just be the engine warming up. old cars had to do that years ago.......
but that running rough, there at the drive-in....... thats your clue...... you might start looking for vacuum leaks, check the fuel pressure after its been running a while, and check to see if the floats are hanging up when it starts running funny(flooding out the top of the carb/vents)..........

Yes but that’s what the plugs look like after idling. What I’ve read about checking plugs is that you have to check them *right after* the run-type that you think is causing an issue, so I’d have to get it at medium-load 2000-rpm and then immediately shut it off and check the plugs. There’s absolutely no way in hell this engine should be getting this poor of fuel economy with the way I drive. Guys with identical setups (same cam, carb, and trans) in Chevy C10s see 17 highway and 15 city.
I do have a plan for narrowing down vacuum leaks, though I’m unsure of how to check floats. I’ll bring these ideas up to my friends that know more than me.
